Content: Even in the 1930s the problems caused by the Anglo-French partition of the Ottoman Empire's Middle Eastern territories after World War I were proving difficult to solve. Arab leaders sought independence from European control for their lands, while Jewish Zionists wanted to emigrate to what would later become Israel.
