Description
Louise Nevelson speaks about the benefit party and her admiration for Merce Cunningham and John Cage; Cage and Cunningham describe the origins of their collaboration; Cunningham speaks about collaboration with contemporary artists, especially Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns; Nevelson gives her opinion on the essence of both Cunningham's choreography and Cage's music; Cunningham speaks about the popularity of dance and some of the recent societal shifts that may be responsible for its appeal; he gives his opinion about dance as free of economic influence; he speaks briefly about the history of non-traditional venues and his use of them; Cage speaks about how Cunningham inspires him; Nevelson speaks about awareness, creativity, and her belief in the necessity of art; they express mutual admiration for one another; Cage briefly speaks about his working process and his desire to liberate the arts from one another; he references a recent piece of writing, "Where are we going? And what are we eating" [Presumably, the early title for Cage's work "Where are we eating? And what are we eating"]; Nevelson describes her opinion on the nature of dance and equates movement with life; she speaks about her own work and comments on the life of the wood she uses for her sculpture; she expresses her gratitude and appreciation for the night's event.
