Notes
Caption title.
Venue: Théâtre du Cirque Olympique.
Statement of responsibility: Imp. Jules Rigo et Cie.
Biographical/historical: The féerie or fairy play La corde de pendu, first presented at the Théâtre du Cirque Olympique, Paris, in 1844, was written by Ferdinand Laloue and Anicet Bourgeois. Its choreography was credited to Monsieur Laurent.
Biographical/historical: This print, numbered 99-100, probably belongs to the series Galerie dramatique, published by Maison Martinet, Hautecoeur frères beginning in 1844, though it is not included among the items from the series documented in George Chaffee's "Catalogue of the French souvenir lithographs (and varia) of the Romantic ballet," Dance index, v. 3, nos. 9-11, Sept.-Nov. 1944, p. 204. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds an uncolored copy of this print.
Biographical/historical: The printing and publishing house of Maison Martinet was founded in 1796 by Aaron Martinet, 1762-1841, who became well-known for publishing satirical prints. In 1822 the firm assumed the name Hautecoeur-Martinet, after Martinet's son-in-law Hermenégilde Hautecoeur, who became its head after Martinet's retirement in 1824. The brothers Eugène and Alfred Hautecoeur, the Hautecoeur frères, managed the business from 1843 to 1867. Jules Hautecoeur, Alfred's son and the great-grandson of the founder, later became the sole proprietor of Ancienne Maison Martinet.
Physical Description
Chromolithographs
Extent: 1 print : lithograph, color ; 28 x 36 cm.
Description
Depiction of a scene from the féerie La corde de pendu. With the exception of the couple seated at far left, the figures represented in this print all have the oversized heads appropriate to denizens of "Le pays des grosses têtes." The central couple, in simple costumes that contrast with the eighteenth-century attire of the others, appear to be actors or dancers in a play-within-a-play.
