DescriptionTelevision adaptation of Twyla Tharp's modern dance work In the upper room. In her introduction to the work, Tharp discusses her choreographic process and demonstrates the same choreography to two contrasting pieces of music ("Fever," sung by Buddy Guy, and "Java jive," sung by the Ink Spots) to illustrate the relationship of music and dance. The origins of In the upper room are shown in recordings made in 1985, depicting Tharp, Christine Uchida, Shelley Washington, Jamie Bishton, and others in rehearsal. Tharp also talks about her long familiarity with the music of Philip Glass, which led her to commission the score for In the upper room.
