Biographical/historical: Lucien Petipa, brother of the choreographer and balletmaster Marius Petipa, was a leading male dancer of the Romantic ballet, an era generally dominated by ballerinas. He was the first interpreter of the role of Albrecht, the duplicitous nobleman who is redeemed by love, in Jean Coralli's ballet Giselle (1841).
Biographical/historical: Le diable à quatre (choreography, Joseph Mazilier; music, Adolphe Adam) was first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1845. In the role of Count Polinski, a neglectful husband, Petipa becomes an unwitting participant in an innocent form of wife-swapping.
