DescriptionDocumentary on the Royal Ballet, focusing on rehearsals for two ballets: Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, and Frederick Ashton's Monotones no. 2. In voiceover commentaries, Ashton talks about the company; the importance of the production of Romeo and Juliet, which had multiple casts; and the creation of Monotones. Two of the casts for Romeo and Juliet, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, and Lynn Seymour and Christopher Gable, are seen rehearsing the three major pas de deux in the ballet (balcony scene, crypt, bedroom). The ballet's designer, Nicholas Georgiadis, confers with Covent Garden staff members on the ballet's sets, and discusses details of a costume with Lynn Seymour. Ashton is seen working in the studio on Monotones no. 2, danced by Anthony Dowell, Vyvyan Lorrayne and Robert Mead.
