DescriptionPrint shows the French politician and Theophilanthropist Lépaux standing on a three-legged stool perched upon a stone dais reading Religion de la Nature to surrounding caricatures of people and animals, including the Duke of Bedford as Leviathan. Other figures presented include: William Godwin (as a diminutive ass); Thomas Paine (as a crocodile in stays); Charles Lamb and Charles Lloyd (as frogs); and Coleridge and Southey (as donkey-headed men). The verses below the image begin: "behold! / The Directorial LAMA, sovereign Priest / LEPAUX -- whom Atheists worship -- at whose nod / Bow their meek heads -- the Men without a God!"
