Description
Lecture on Tibetan opera or lha-mo, covering its origins in legend; the rituals surrounding the performances, which are often linked to exorcism; its elements of singing, drumming, and dancing; its subject matter; the seven basic dance styles used in opera; the role of the audience; and some important opera troupes. A survey of the current state of opera in Tibet under the Chinese regime and among the exiled Tibetan communities includes background information on Chaksam-pa, the Tibetan Dance and Opera Company, the featured performers at Tibet Week. The lecture concludes with a detailed analysis of the opera Sukyi Nima, presented during Tibet Week, including a plot synopsis and discussions of its origins in the Sanskrit play Sakuntala, its Buddhist themes, and the symbolism of its costumes, masks, and scenic elements.
