Notes
Content: "Ephebe" was the Athenian term for a boy who had reached the age of eighteen. For the next two years, he would undergo various sorts of training and tests to prepare him for the rights and duties of full citizenship attained at age twenty. "Bandelettes" are belts or girdles with tie-strings on the ends, often seen in connection with persons making offerings. The "bells" illustrated here look like triangles or wind-chimes.
Content: Marsyas was a minor deity who was a master flute player. He challenged Apollo to a contest of music judged by the Muses. Though Apollo was named the winner, he felt offended at having been challenged and flayed Marsyas, using a knife to cut off his skin all in one piece.
Content: Written below image: "On the Ionic column is an ephebe, perhaps Atys or Adonis, with a branch and a phial. Diana with bow and arrow in an oriental dress wears a Phrygian cap. Two Satyrs and two Nymphs above are interspersed with bandelettes and tintinabula or bells."
