Notes
Content: Marsyas was a satyr who had boasted that he was a better musician than Apollo, who had then beaten him in a contest and skinned him alive for his arrogance. Thalia was the muse of comedy, while Calliope was the muse of epic poetry. An Oread was a type of nymph who lived in the mountains. A thyrsus was a rod with what looked like a pine cone at the top. It was a symbol of Dionysus, the god of wine.
Content: Written below image: "Apollo Olympus, laurel wreathed, holds a lyre and plectrum, at his feet a swan. Marsyas, music teacher of Apollo, laurel crowned is seated and holds a double flute. A satyr, the young Panisque, looks up at Thalia. The muse at right is Calliope. Bust of nymph Oreades holds a thyrsus and is beside a satyr."
