Description
"The group of Italians pictured on page 589 are fair representatives of some thousands who have recently hurried to the United Sates to escape possible military conscription for service in Abyssinia. Our artist photographed them at Ellis Island, the great immigrant depot in New York Harbor, where they are being detained in accordance with the law forbidding the admission of foreigners with no visible means of support. They do not appear to possess military possibilities, yet effective soldiers have been made of worse material. Indeed, it is possible that the wretched fellows may yet find themselves in their country's uniform, as Prime Minister Rudini has cabled that Italy will provide for the return of such of the immigrants as may be rejected."--from source text.
