Notes
Content: Printed on border: "When the 'gold rush' set in, men in their thousands flocked to the diggings, but the fair sex was but sparsely represented. Stories were soon afloat of how poor girls, emigrating from England, not only found plenty of work and exceedingly high wages, but, what was more to the point, wealthy husbands. Working girls, domestic servants, and others went out in consequence of these reports in large numbers. The caricature above, which appeared in the 'Comic almanack' (1851) represents the importation of the fair sex from the Savage Islands in consequence of having exported all British women to Australia." Written on border: "4-20-1901"
