Content: Printed on border: "The first represents an ordinary gentlewoman, the lady of one of those old manor-houses which are still scattered over many parts of our island ; the second is a lady of quality of the same date. We are surprised at the constrast offered by these figures to those we have been describing in the reigns of Elizabeth and James I., and especially at the character of plainness seen in that of the gentlewoman. This plainness, or we may say soberness, was general during the period at which we are now arrived…"
