Content: Printed on border: "The right, or Greenland whale, differes materially from the one we have imperfectly described. The sperm is an inhabitant of warm latitudes. Lieutenant Maury discovered that the torrid zone is to the right whale as a sea of fire, through which it could not pass. The 'feed' of this species is one of the miracles of nature : it is a soft, gelatinous substance, composed of particles which are often too small to be discovered by the naked eye." Written on border: "Mar. 1856" Foxing and pink marks on image. Includes additional text.
