"Scenes during the Second Dacian War, 104-106 A.D. Bas-relief, Trajan's Column, Rome, 113-114 A.D. Engr., early 18th cen."--written on border.Roman soldiers dressed in lorica segmentata (armor made of riveted metal bands) on the march, led by an officer dressed in lorica Graeca (Greek-style armor resembling a muscled chest) with signifer (standard bearer carrying disks and insignia on a pole), vexillatius (holding another sort of standard made of a square of cloth on a crossbeam) and aquilifer (“eagle bearer” bearing Jupiter’s symbolic bird atop a pole). Between the officer and first standard bearer is a “cornicen” or trumpeter, another is among the top row of men. Still more soldiers load pack mules at the right rear.
