Content: Printed on border: "Battle honours. 'Primus in Indis' The Castle and Key, superscribed 'Gibraltar,' and with the motto 'Montis insignia calpe' underneath. The Sphinx, superscribed 'Egypt.' … History and traditions. The regiment was raised in 1702. It proceeded to India in 1754. During Clive's campaign it displayed conspicuous gallantry at Plassey, and several other engagements. It took part in the defence of Gibraltar, 1779-83. In Egypt in 1801 it was distinguished for its heroic gallantry at the capture of Fort Marabout. During the Peninsular War, 1809-14, it fought at Albuhera, and several important action during the war. It was in the Burmese War, 1824-6, the Mahratta War, 1843, and the Crimean War, 1854-6. It displayed a noble example of discipline on board the Transport 'Sarah Sands,' when that ship caught fire while proceeding with the regiment to India to take part in suppressing the Indian Mutiny. It took part in the Tirah Expedition, 1897-8. during the South African War it formed part of Buller's Army, and fully upheld the grand traditions of the past."
