Notes
Content: Written on border: "Mar. 1876" Printed on border: "The seals are killed when they rise to the surface by a blow with a club upon the nose, and are then skinned, with the blubber remaining upon the skin. The blubber is a layer of solid fat, some four inches thick, which lies just under the skin, and is the most valuable product of the fishery. The skin, with the blubber, is worth from four to five dollars, and finds a ready market in the ships bound for England. The inhabitants of the islands in the St. Lawrence go out in sledges during the day when the weather is favorable, and capture the seals in the same way." Includes additional text.
