Content: Caption on back: "First "war bond" liberty ship to be named for an outstanding Negro American, the SS Robert S. Abbot was launched on April 13, 1944 at the Permanente Metals Corporation Shipyard No. 2 at Richmond, Calif.; the ship, honoring the founder The Chicago Defender, was the third name for a noted Negro editor and publisher; Prominent members of the launching party included [right to left]: Mrs. John. H. Ssenstacke, sponsor; Miss Lulu Mae Hamel, flower girl and shipyard worker who sold $80,000 worth of bonds in the Fourth War Loan Drive; Capt. Euclid Louis Taylor; Mr. John H. Sengstacke, nephew of Mr. Abbot and president of the Chicago Defender Publishing Company; sister of founder, and the Rev. Roy Nichols, who pronounced the invocation."
