Free end paper; 1 blank leaf; (1 loose leaf, ALS by Pres. Garfield, May 31, 1869; descriptive note on blank verso); 1 blank leaf; 1 leaf, portrait of Pres. Garfield pasted to verso; tissue inter-leaf; title page; 1 leaf MS laid into framing leaf (2 written sides); 18 blank leaves; free end paper
Description
Poem relates to the death of President Garfield, shot 80 days earlier. Manuscript drafts written in black ink on faded white paper, all cancelled by Whitman, with Whitman's note at top to Mr. Clarke regarding the setup and proof: "if convenient—have this set up immediately & send me a proof this afternoon—by 6." Autograph letter by Garfield dated May 31, 1869 written in purple ink on lined United States House of Representatives letterhead.
