A look at four turning points in Merce Cunningham's artistic evolution, as well as his use of technology, via onscreen informational text and brief performance/interview excerpts. These include: the separation of music and dance (with clip from a performance of Split Sides); chance operations (with clip from Ocean); choreography for the film camera (with clip from Beach Birds For Camera) and using computers to make dances, specifically the Life Forms software program (with clip from BIPED).
