Description
Interview with Violette Verdy conducted by June Evans Goldberg in January 1978 at the Paris Opéra. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). Violette Verdy, director of the Paris Opéra Ballet [Opéra de Paris Ballet], speaks with June Evans Goldberg about returning to her native France after many years with the New York City Ballet; her aims and goals for the Paris Opéra de Paris ballether main responsibilities as director including with respect to the Opéra de Paris Ballet school; the challenge of working within the restrictions of the union rules; her multiple roles including that of teacher and coach; more on the challenges presented by the unions; the selection of repertory and recruiting of choreographers; plans for foreign and domestic tours; her intent to exercise her authority with discretion; her qualities of optimism and openness; the status of the Paris Opéra ballet as compared with that of the Paris Opéra; problems of sharing facilities with the opera; the frequency of performances and reasons the dancers generally do not like performing as part of an opera production; new productions; scheduling rehearsals; financial aspects including the dancers' compensation; government support of the arts in France; [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
