Biographical/historical: Alexandra Danilova first danced the role of the street dancer in Massine's 1933 revival of Le beau Danube for Original Ballets Russes. Massine subsequently formed a new company, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and presented Le beau Danube in its opening season in 1938. It continued to be an audience favorite, and Danilova became closely identified with the role of the street dancer. The role of her lover the hussar, first performed by Massine himself, was memorably reincarnated by the British danseur Frederic Franklin.
Biographical/historical: Alexandre Iacovleff, whose last name is also spelled Jacovleff or Yakovlev, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was a member of Mir Iskusstva, the art circle that also included ballet impresario Serge Diaghilev. He traveled extensively in the Far East and Africa, finding many subjects for his art there.
Forms part of the Alexandra Danilova collection. Graphics.
