Biographical/historical: The action has been described as a dancing lesson. George Chaffee, in the article cited above, identifies the white-bearded man as the performer Mr. [Peter] Richings and the young woman as the ballerina Augusta Maywood, who first danced in the English version of Le dieu et la bayadère, titled The maid of Cashmere, in 1837.

Scene from Daniel Auber's opera Le dieu et la bayadère. At left a white-bearded man, costumed in the style of the court of Mughal India, leans on a cane as he watches a young woman, who strikes a dance pose. Behind them in the elaborately decorated room are other women and men, probably portraying dancers, courtiers, and servants.
