Description
Celia Franca, the British-born co-founder and artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada, looks back upon her career, with special emphasis on her achievements with the company. She begins by describing her freelance work since her retirement in 1974, including two working trips to China. She then reminisces about her childhood in London, her studies with Antony Tudor, and her experiences as dancer and balletmistress for the Metropolitan Ballet. She recalls her invitation to Canada in 1950, the early years of the National Ballet of Canada, and some highlights of its history. Contributing their special insights are her colleagues and collaborators Betty Oliphant, principal of the National Ballet School; musical director George Crum; CBC-TV producer Norman Campbell, and the dancers Veronica Tennant and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Franca also discusses her approach to teaching ballet, and is seen working with a class of teenaged dancers.
