Biographical/historical: The British artist William Hogarth frequently satirized contemporary society in his paintings and prints. In this work he skewers the licentious atmosphere of masquerade balls, where masks and costumes concealed the wearers' true identities and literally cloaked bad behavior.

Description
Depiction of a masquerade ball in a large hall with a painting of a bacchanalia at the far end of the room. The caption below the title provides a key to elements in the print: "A. a sacrifice to Priapus. B. a pair of Lecherometers showing ye Companys Inclinations as they approach em. Invented for the use of Ladys & Gentlemen by ye Ingenious Mr. H----r."
