Terry Gross introduces the program and speaks about her guest, John Cage; ca. 1:44-4:45, excerpt from Cage's Indeterminacy (1959) with musician David Tudor; John Cage speaks about his interest in the exploration of composition and changes in his career over time; he speaks about why he chose to pursue a career in music instead of painting; he speaks about his composition process and interest in everyday sounds; he speaks about perception and meditation; he recalls a lecture given by [Daisetz Teitaro] Suzuki [his Zen Buddhist teacher] and how he related these concepts to composition, especially in his use of chance operations; he speaks about using indeterminacy with performers of his compositions; he speaks about memory and experience, and quotes Marcel Duchamp, Reńe Char, and Erik Satie; they speak briefly about sense perceptions and encountering art; Cage speaks briefly about hunting for mushrooms; he speaks about ordering the relationship between nature and society, especially the influence of Buckminster Fuller's ideas about this order; he speaks about several Buddhist ideas of "ways of living"; he tells an anecdote about playing chess with "Teeny" [Alexina] Duchamp and speaks more about his friendship with the Duchamps, especially with Marcel; he speaks about Duchamp's secret final work, Étant donnés; Gross concludes the program.
