Sound quality is poor. Mary Hinkson speaks softly and is difficult to understand. In addition there is extraneous noise including "tape hiss" as well as occasional short gaps.
Description
Interview with Mary Hinkson conducted by Agnes de Mille in 1974 as part of her research for her biography of Martha Graham entitled Martha. Streaming file 1 (approximately 32 minutes). Mary Hinkson speaks with Agnes de Mille about first meeting Martha Graham when she came to New York; her early training with Margaret H'Doubler in Wisconsin; the company [Martha Graham Dance Company] in the 1950s; Graham's return to teaching after a serious injury; performing in lecture-demonstrations; teaching to make ends meet; Graham's relationship with her dancers; Erick Hawkins as a teacher; Graham's coaching her, verbally, in Canticle for innocent comedians [ends abruptly]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 32 minutes). Mary Hinkson continues to speak with Agnes de Mille about Martha Graham including her expressed wish that her work be destroyed upon her death; the tour in 1970 without Graham and the very low morale of the company; the chamber company tour; Graham's absence from the company for over one year; keeping the company afloat during this period including the creation of the apprentice company; Graham's recovery and return; Ron Protas and his relationship with Graham and the company; salaries and other financial aspects of the company; Bethsabée de Rothschild's relationship with Graham; the Bat-dor company; Bertram Ross's departure from the company; certain aspects of Graham's personality [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Mary Hinkson continues to speak with Agnes de Mille about Martha Graham including her working methods for example, in Seraphic dialogue; being coached by Graham; Graham's changing of her choreography for different dancers in the same role; Graham's harshness to certain dancers as well as to herself; Graham's reaction to Don McDonagh's book [The rise and fall of modern dance?].
