Biographical/historical: The black crook, a theatrical extravaganza first presented at Niblo's Garden, New York, in 1866, is considered to be the first "book musical," with a unifying story linking its songs and dances. Highly popular, it was revived many times in New York, and widely performed on tour. This print represents a pose from Act II, scene 4, with Stalacta, queen of the Golden Realm, surrounded by her attendant demons. Their pas de demons was a highlight of the production. The central group of three women resembles the central trio on a sheet music cover for the Black crook waltzes, though this resemblance may be due to both artists' observation of the scene in the theatre.
