Biographical/historical: The French artist Pierre Carrier-Belleuse began his career with genre paintings in oil, but switched to pastel after 1885. He frequently depicted ballet dancers in his works.

Description
Depictions of ballet dancers, in performance or behind the scenes. The picture titled "L'etoile" portrays the Italian ballerina Carlotta Zambelli in a performance of Joseph Hansen's ballet of that title, revived at the Paris Opera in 1907 with Zambelli in the principal role.
