Sound quality is good with respect to the speaker Marion Scott. The recording is marred by occasional extraneous noise and "tape hiss." In addition, Doris Siegel's remarks and some of the students' questions are difficult to understand.
Description
Lecture given by Marion Scott at Doris (Einstein) Siegel's class, Introduction to dance theatre, at University of California, Los Angeles, on January 15, 1975. Doris Siegel who is also present, speaks briefly in the last part of streaming audio file 2; there is also a question and answer period with the students. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 31 minutes). Marion Scott speaks about her background including her studying with Martha Graham and her composition classes with Louis Horst; becoming a choreographer including her studies with Doris Humphrey, Franziska Boas, and Helen Tamiris; her dances for U.C.L.A. [University of California, Los Angeles]; her creative process including examples from a [then] work-in-progress titled Mysterium; Scott answers questions from the students; topics include Jungian themes in her work, hermaphroditism, the relationship she feels between creativity, beauty, and God; how she feels about dance critics including Clive Barnes, Walter Terry, and John Martin; her unsuccessful hip replacement [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 13 minutes). Question and answer period with Marion Scott continues: topics include her aesthetic sense and the sculptural quality of her choreography; her work Abyss; Enrico Cecchetti's seven categories of movement [reflected in her work Sevenfold]; more on her work Abyss; the music she commissioned from Paul Chihara for Mysterium; Doris Siegel speaks briefly about lighting Scott's work.
