DescriptionA performance of three pieces--Totem Ancestor, Inlets 2 and Signals, as part of the 92nd Street Y's series Fridays At Noon. Each piece is preceded by an introduction from Merce Cunningham Dance Company co-choreographer and former dancer Robert Swinston. Following a brief introduction from Fridays At Noon co-curator Catherine Tharin and some remarks by Swinston, MCDC dancer Daniel Roberts performs Totem Ancestor (2:23). Swinston then discusses the next piece, Inlets 2 (4:55), which is performed by members of the dance corps (9:35) Upon its conclusion, Swinston introduces, and the dancers perform, Signals (29:51). A Q&A portion follows the dance's conclusion (56:34) The first question considers how the lack of 'stars' within the Cunningham company affects dancers and also asks about Cunningham's creation of Events, unique, sight-specific pieces which are performed only once. The next questioner inquires about the use of hands in Cunningham choreography and asks the dancers how they incorporate the more comical moments to be found in some Cunningham pieces (59:34) The final question centers on outside influences upon Cunningham's work (105:50). Please note that while the file runs longer, useful content ends at approximately 106:50, after which footage consists of a static shot of the area and microphone setup used for the program.
