Description
The Asmonean was the first English-language Jewish weekly in the United States, published and edited from 1849-1858 by Robert Lyon, a London native who emigrated to New York in 1844. Publication run: Vol. 1, no. 1 (Oct. 26, 1849)-v. 18, no. 8 (June 4, 1858). Title varies slightly. Largely in English and Hebrew; a German supplement to v. 4, no. 10 was issued on June 27, 1851; began a German section in February 1856 titled: Der Asmonean : eine den Interessen der amerikanischen Israeliten ausschliesslich gewidmete Zeitung.
