Series of advertising cards issued by Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Company, each consisting of a map of a country of the world with related illustrations

Collection Data

Description
This collection consists of 50 cards issued in 1889 to advertise and promote the coffee of the Arbuckle Bros. company of Brooklyn. The face of each card shows a map of a country along with some iconic imagery that represented the products, economic activity, or other stereotype of the place. Text appears on the verso of each card. The Library acquired the series of cards by purchase in approximately 2004. Presumably the original collector of these cards participated in a late 19th century version of our current consumer loyalty programs, buying packages of Arbuckle coffee repeatedly to acquire as close to a full set of the cards as possible. Then the collector could trade cards with other Arbuckle coffee drinkers when necessary to fill gaps and dispense with duplicates.
