Description
The collection (ca. 1920s-1980s) consists of exterior and interior views of Harlem nightclubs and theaters (1920s-1960s); portraits and candid shots of entertainers, individual musicians, orchestras and chorus girls appearing at or affiliated with specific clubs and theaters (1920s-1960s); and views of nightclub patrons (ca. 1940s).Also depicted are views of clubs located in other parts of New York City; views of crowds gathered outside theaters; reproductions of broadsides and a club menu; studio portraits of club owners; a group portrait of beauty contestants; and maps showing the locations of certain clubs. Of note are views of the crowd outside the Lafayette Theatre for the opening of the Federal Theatre Project production of "Macbeth" (1936); views of the interior and exterior of the Cotton Club (ca. 1920s-1930s); portraits of brothers Connie and George Immerman, owners of Connie's Inn (ca. 1920s); a portrait of the entertainment troupe The Three Eddies (ca. 1920); and reproductions of broadsides advertising performances at the Apollo Theatre (ca. 1940s-1950s). Also included are a souvenir journal from the Apollo Theatre, entitled "The Apollo Story" (ca. 1965), and pages from a souvenir program from the Cotton Club, entitled the "Third Cotton Club Parade" (ca. 1938), when the club was located on West 48th Street, in midtown Manhattan, during the late 1930s.
