Biographical/historical: The Irish tobacco merchant, Nathaniel Trumbull, was born in 1749, probably in Dublin. He probably inherited the Dublin tobacco business from his father. Trumbull ran the firm until 1814 when he transferred it to Nathaniel Anderson who was his nephew and partner. Thereafter until his death he led the life of a country gentleman with social connections to the Irish aristocracy. In 1821 Anderson brought a. Chancery suit against Trumbull who died in Dublin in 1823.
Content: The papers consist of personal correspondence, 1790-1824, and business correspondence, 1722-1822, with business clients, tobacco growers, and business associates in Ireland, England, Scotland, Europe, and America, including very interesting accounts of the effects on commerce and social life in Ireland of the French landing at Killala in County Mayo and the 1798 Irish rebellion in the north-west and south. There also are business accounts, 1726-1819, account books, 1755-1812, some account books recording workmen's hours and wages, banking, insurance, and legal papers, pamphlets, leaflets, and broadsides, published records of disbursement by the County of Dublin (Abstracts of Presentments) 1807-1819, and maps and surveys, 1723-1819.
