Description
Martin Worman was an actor, playwright, lyricist, director, female impersonator, activist and academic, working in the United States, primarily in San Francisco and New York from the late 1960s through the early 1990s. As a prominent member of the avant garde hippie theater group, The Cockettes, Worman wrote sketches and lyrics for numerous productions. He later went on to co-found the Gay Mens Theater Collective, which created the notable performance piece Crimes Against Nature. In the late 1970s, Worman moved to New York City where he attended and taught at New York University creating the persona Dr. Queen while working on his doctorate. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on the The Cockettes interviewing many living members as part of his research. Worman past away from AIDS in 1993 while working at Antioch College. The audiovisual materials in Worman's collection consist of films, performances and documentaries by and about the Cockettes and Cockettes' members. There are also items from Worman's time at the Gay Mens Theater Collective and NYU.
