Description: Architectural survey documenting Manhattanville, an Upper Manhattan community bordered by Hamilton Heights, Harlem, and the Hudson River, mainly from the 1860s to 1920s. Images consist of some street scenes, cityscapes, and views of road and subway construction; and architectural views of churches, a convent, educational facilities, residences, some local businesses, a fire engine house, a hospital and an orphanage. Buildings depicted include the Church of the Annunciation; the Daniel Devlin Estate; Manhattan College; the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart; the Oswald Ottendorfer Estate; St. Mary's Protestant Episcopal Church; the Sheltering Arms children's estate; and the Daniel Tiemann residence.

Some images are duplicates.; Content: Photographs accompanied by unpublished typeset manuscript, typewritten text, photostats of newspaper articles and a street map, a reproduction of a letter, and a picture booklet.; Biographical/historical: Edward Allen Jennings, physician and historian, was an authority on church architecture and the history of old New York. He compiled and wrote two unpublished architectural surveys: "Church Designs: Also Residences and College Buildings" (1937), and "Manhattanville: an Architectural Retrospect" (1940). Jennings, the son of architect Arthur B. Jennings, died in New York in 1958, age 76.
