Notes
Biographical/historical: Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, Scottish writer, scientist, lawyer, Whig politician and abolitionist. His 1808 critique -- in the Edinburgh Review, which he co-founded -- of Byron's Hours of Idleness prompted the poet to respond with English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. Brougham acted as legal adviser to Queen Caroline, and his brilliant defense led to her acquittal at her trial in 1820. He helped establish the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, London University, and as a reformer did much work in addressing issues of law reform, slavery, and education in Great Britain.
