Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (August 27 1871 – December 28 1945) was an American journalist and novelist. Ninth of the ten surviving children born to an impoverished family, his sporadic education culminated in a year at Indiana University, after which he began work as a newspaper reporter in Chicago in 1892. Drieser's first novel was published in 1900, whilst "Free and other stories" was his first collection of short stories.
