- Ernst Papanek (1900-1973) was an Austrian-born child psychologist and educator known for his work with refugee children during and after World War II and for his involvement in socialist parties in Europe and the United States. Collection consists of Papanek's correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, sound recordings, and other materials, most of which relate to his work with children's homes in Europe and the U.S. General correspondence concerns juvenile delinquency; refugee children of World War II; and Papanek's directorships of American Youth for World Service, 1945-1951, Child Projects of the Unitarian Service Committee, 1946-1947, Brooklyn Training School for Girls, 1948-1949, and the Wiltwyck School for Boys, Esopus, N.Y., 1949-1958. Also, materials pertaining to Papanek's professional associations and his interest in socialism especially in Austria; desk and pocket diaries, 1938-1966; typescripts of articles, lectures and other writings including his book The Austrian School Reform (1961); photographs of his work with children's homes in Europe and the United States, ca. 1937-1960s; and sound recordings of interviews with Papanek about his experiences in Nazi-occupied France conducted by Edward Linn between 1959 and 1967, and of lectures delivered by Papanek for college social science courses in the 1960s.

Chronology: 1900 Born in Vienna, Austria 1919 Graduated Federal Realgymnasium in Vienna 1919-27 Studied at the University of Vienna, Medical School and Faculty of Philosophy. 1932-34 Elected member of the City Council and the Diet of Vienna 1936-38 Edited the International Pedagogical Information journal with the League of Nations in Geneva. 1938-40 General Director of the children's institutions and school for refugee children of the O. S. E (Organisation pour la Santé et l'Education) in France. 1940 Escaped from occupied France with his family through the aid of the Underground. 1943 Graduated New York School for Social Work, Columbia University. 1943-45 Educational consultant to the Children's Aid Society, Foster Home Department, N. Y. 1945-47 Director Child Projects of the Unitarian Service Committee, Boston, Mass. 1945-47 Executive director of American Youth for World Youth 1946 Travelled to Europe to study educational and child welfare institutions. 1948-49 Executive director of the Brooklyn Training School for Girls 1958-73 Professor of education at Queens College 1962 Presented with the award for distinguished service to Democracy by the N. Y. chapter of the League for Industrial Democracy. 1964 Delegate of the Socialist Party of the U. S. at the council conference of the Socialist International in Brussels. 1966 Visiting professor, Hiroshima University 1973 Died August 5 on a visit to Vienna
- Content: Correspondence, desk diaries, lecture notes, articles, photographs, sound recordings and other materials dating from 1928-1976, most of which relates to Ernst Papanek's work with children's homes in Europe and the United States. The bulk of these papers date from 1940-1970.
