Contains twenty-five black and white and sepia photographic postcards and three black and white gelatin silver prints; most images created by Carl Van Vechten. Thirteen of the postcards were mailed by Van Vechten to Donald Angus between 1939 and 1959. Twenty-one of the postcards contain brief notes on the verso to Angus on a variety of topics. Some postcards are signed "Carlo" and others with the initial "C." The remaining three photographic prints are assumed to be gifts to Angus from Van Vechten. Subjects include renowned performers and figures in the visual and performing arts and literary world. Identified personalities are: Judith Anderson, Donald Angus (performing at the Stage Door Canteen), Josephine Baker, Sarah Bernhardt, Jean Cocteau, Alice Delysia, Isak Dineson, Lotta Faust, Della Fox, Juanita Hall, Avery Hopwood, Henri Matisse, Rose McClendon, Mistinguett, Lucy Monroe (performing at the Stage Door Canteen), Bill Robinson, Gertrude Stein (sculpture by Jo Davidson), Jessica Tandy, Valentine Tessier, Alice B. Toklas, Carl Van Vechten, and Anna May Wong.
Biographical/historical: Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was an author, critic and photographer who photographed many of the leading cultural figures of his time. Donald Angus (born in New York City, circa 1902) was an interior decorator in New York City and was in a long-standing relationship with Van Vechten.
