Description
The Aline MacMahon Papers consist of correspondence, programs and photographs which document her career and personal life. The correspondence includes early dealings with the Shuberts and fan mail. Photographs include both personal and professional images. There are also transcripts of oral history interviews highlighting her life and career.

Biographical/historical: Aline MacMahon was born May 3, 1899 in McKeesport Pa. She attended Erasmus Hall High School and Barnard College. After studying and performing with the Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre, Miss MacMahon made her Broadway debut in THE MIRAGE in 1921. She has appeared in over fifty plays. Included are THE EVE OF SAINT MARK 1942, ROMEO AND JULIET 1959, CORIOLANUS 1965, THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT 1961 and TRELAWNY OF THE 'WELLS' 1975. Miss MacMahon has had a distinguished film career. Among her forty-three films are FIVE STAR FINAL 1931, ONCE IN A LIFETIME 1932, KIND LADY 1935, AH, WILDERNESS' 1935, DRAGON SEED 1944, for which she won an Oscar nomination, THE SEARCH 1948 and ALL THE WAY HOME 1963. She has also appeared on many radio and television programs. Miss MacMahon was married to Clarence S. Stern who died in 1975.
